Dr Canyon started her journey in medicine in Australia where she graduated from the University of Western Australia with Honors in Medicine and began her training in Internal Medicine. Over the years she worked in many rural and outer urban Australian hospitals in Internal Medicine and Emergency medicine.  Prior to medical school, she produced an Honors Thesis in Molecular Biology regarding nitrogen handling in Escherichia coli and was subsequently awarded a 'First Class' mark, the highest grade in Australia for such a thesis. This allowed her to receive a full scholarship to pursue a PhD.  She completed a PhD in myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury at James Cook University and published in several peer-reviewed journals.

Dr Canyon moved to Kailua in 2012 and since that time has completed further training in Family Medicine in the Hawaiian islands through the University of Hawai'i Family Medicine Residency Program.

Outside of her work at Kailua Primary Care, Dr Canyon continues to maintain her clinical skills in rural Emergency Medicine, In-Patient Medicine and Hospice. Dr Canyon is credentialed with the Hawaii Emergency Physician Associates (HEPA) to continue to work on the Island of Hawaii at Kohala Hospital. During the Covid pandemic, she credentialed with Mid-Pacific Hospitalists (MPH) and provided relief in-patient cover at an outer-urban hospital on Oahu. She continues to provide assistance as Medical Director to Navian Hospice (previously Hospice Hawaii) when needed.

Dr Canyon is very enthusiastic about Lifestyle Medicine which refers to integrating a healthy plant-based diet, stress management, and physical activity for optimal health and disease prevention. She is a member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine and working towards certification in this specialty which is supported by the American Board of Family Medicine and the American Academy of Family Practice for its evidence-based approach to disease prevention and treatment.
